VNA Truck (Man-Up and Man-Down) training in Derby

Very narrow aisle trucks work in guided aisles barely wider than a pallet, lifting to 15 metres or more. Man-up versions raise the operator with the load.

About the vna truck (man-up and man-down)

VNA trucks operate in aisles of roughly 1.6 to 1.9 metres, guided by floor-mounted rails or a wire buried in the floor. The truck does not turn in the aisle at all; instead a turret head or swivelling forks rotate the load through 180 degrees to serve racking on either side. This allows very tall racking and the densest storage of any conventional truck.

There are two families. Man-down VNA trucks keep the operator at floor level and lift only the load, typically with cameras or height indicators to help positioning. Man-up (also called combi or order-picker-style) VNA trucks raise the operator's cab with the forks, giving a direct view of the pallet at height and allowing case picking from the same machine.

Working at height brings specific hazards: harness and lanyard use on man-up trucks, aisle entry and exit procedures, emergency lowering, and the rescue plan if a truck fails aloft. Our instructors cover your site's own emergency procedures as part of the course.

What the course covers

  • Aisle entry, rail or wire guidance, and aisle exit
  • Turret head and fork rotation to serve both sides
  • Stacking at full height with cameras or direct view
  • Working-at-height controls and the rescue procedure
  • Battery handling and end-of-shift parking

VNA Truck (Man-Up and Man-Down) training questions

Do you train man-up and man-down separately?

They are different categories and are certificated separately. Many customers run both and we can cover them in one visit.

Does the operator need a harness?

On man-up trucks, yes — a harness and restraint lanyard are a legal requirement and are part of the pre-use checks we teach.
